I have serious doubt religion can be abstracted in any significant way. Religions arose from needs within local groups - needs for stitching a cohesive community, needs for filling holes in uncomprehensible things, needs for spiritual support especially during tough times, etc. It's inevitable that religions have deep hooks into their originating local ethnic communities. Peeling away the ethnic or cultural aspect of a religion would deface it to the extent that it no longer sounds authoritative or original, which is a primal attribute of religion. It would also have to survive feverish challenges by its leaders who have been nurturing it in its most authoritative form and sensitive zealots who having been living it. In essence, such attempt is like trying to come up with a cross-platform device driver or fireware in the software world. Tough, if not impossible.
